From Navigating Obstacle Races to Life’s Obstacles with Coach Spider (Nelson)

Today we have Coach Spider (Nelson) joining us on the Incite Podcast. He has been in the fitness industry for 14 years and has worked with Special Needs, COPD, MS, athletes, strength and conditioning coaches, and many populations

Nelson is a certified personal trainer and kickboxing specialist who has spent most of his life touting the benefits and importance of fitness and training. He shares the same sentiments with Coach Muaro on how fitness is a good metaphor that can be translated into our lives and how passionately applying the principles can make you a better person.

Kickboxing just like any other fitness endeavour comes down to “it depends”. You as a person have to find what works for you and your situation, no one size or style fits all, whether it’s MMA, Kickboxing, Self defence or OCR stuff. It’s the same with trainers we’ve to learn that one training style doesn’t work with all clients. You have to find that sweet spot. As a coach, you have to adjust to different clients’ needs and on the flipside as a client, you have to do different things to see what you enjoy.

For someone looking to start and having to choose between OCR and kickboxing when the lockdowns are over remember it all depends on you and your goals. OCR focuses more on more body weight and a more functional style. Kickboxing on the other hand there is a set progression, it is more cardiovascularly-driven and has a different feel.

To end this episode Nelson shares an interesting story about trying the Ultra Beast challenge and not making the cut by about 20 minutes and suggests some races beginners can take like the Warrior Dash, Rugged maniacs, and the spin version of the Spartans is also a good one for beginners.

One thing he wants people to know before they come to a session- they should know themselves. What are your goals? And let’s figure out the rest together

..

At the end of the day, It’s all about intentions and motivations to be successful at your goals and not just going through the motions. That notwithstanding you don’t have to know everything, the reason you are coming for coaching is to learn, and to get better.
